Riga: A Closer Look
Riga is the capital, economic hub and cultural center of Latvia, and has hosted the final of EuroBasket Women 2009.
This city, located on the southern coast of the Gulf of Riga, is home to 700,000 people and has celebrated its 808th anniversary in the summer of 2009, having been founded in 1201.
Riga is one of Europe's hottest tourist destinations thanks to its architecturally interesting ‘old city', beautiful parks and a vibrant nightlife. The old city has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its numerous examples of German Art Nouveau architecture.
Riga also has become a capital of sport as well, having hosted the 2006 IIHF World Ice Hockey Championship and the FIBA Europe 2008 U20 European Championship Men. Arena Riga, which has hosted the final of EuroBasket Women 2009, opened on February 15, 2006. It seats over 11,000 spectators, and includes two restaurants and various other amenities.

Riga: Getting There
Riga International Airport, the biggest airport in the Baltic area is situated 13 km southwest of Riga city. The airport directly connects Riga with 60 destinations in 30 countries serving 3,690,549 passengers in 2008, a 17% increase compared to 2007. The main road A10 connects the city center with the airport and offers convenient travel by car. The airport can also be accessed from the city by Bus lines 22 and 22a the latter being an express connection. Buses run every 15 min and the trip takes about 40 min. Of course, taxi and rental car services are at hand, too.

Riga is connected to 12 destinations throughout Latvia by train as well as the other Baltic states.
Latvia has no highways. However, main roads are connecting Riga with the rest of Latvia and its neighbour countries. The most important roads are A 10 to Ventspils, A8 and A7 to Lithuania, A1 and A2 to Estonia and A 6 to Belarus.
By ship: Baltic Sea ferries connect Riga with Stockholm, Sweden as well as with Kiel and Lübeck in Germany.
